Electronic commerce incorporates a range of technologies and functionalities. EDI, or electronic data interchange, is the computer to computer exchange of business information using a public standard. EDI replaces much of the Government's paper-based procurement processes. DoD EDI is conducted through an infrastructure of gateways, processing nodes, and Value-Added Networks. At present the DoD is not routinely conducting EDI using the Internet although, with certain limitations, the Internet can be used in that way.
